Getting to know the professions – past, present and future

Children will be introduced to different professions, learn to appreciate all kinds of work and identify the skills needed for different jobs. During the session, children work individually and in groups. The task is to explore occupations that have existed historically and in the present day, and to invent occupations for the future. The final product is a collective occupational folder for the group[RR1] .

Duration/length

The project can be completed in a day or over a few days. .

Learning outcomes

The child is introduced to the concept of employment and is guided to explore different occupations and jobs.

The child will recognise his/her own strengths and have confidence in his/her abilities in everyday situations.

The child practises cooperation and interaction skills, self-help, and shared responsibility.

The child learns what money is and what it is used for.

The child recognises that he/she is part of a culturally, linguistically and religiously diverse world.

Which elements of the entrepreneurial skill set does the tool help develop?

Identifying opportunities, creativity, vision, planning and managing, and working with others.

Implementation tips

The folder can be created on paper or digitally, for example as a PowerPoint presentation.

Teachers can talk about different occupations with people in their households

You could also ask a representative of a named profession to visit the group to talk about their work.

After completion of the folder, the group can organise its own job fair, where each member of the group is given a profession to present for a day.
